Have you ever done a spell and felt really excited—only for nothing to happen? Maybe you followed a video step-by-step. Maybe you looked up all the right herbs and crystals. You said the words just like you were supposed to. But then… nothing.

It can feel like the spell just didn’t work. That maybe you did something wrong. Or maybe magick doesn’t even exist.

But here’s the truth: magick is real. It just works in deeper and more invisible ways than most people realize. So let’s talk about why your spell might not be working—and what you can do about it. We’ll break it down in a way that makes sense, even if you’re just starting out. Don't worry, You've got this.

Magick Is Everywhere (Yes, Everywhere!)

First, we need to understand something really important: magick is not just something you do with candles and crystals. Magick is everywhere. It’s in everything.

Everything in existence is an extension of Source, which is a powerful energy, and all energy moves constantly, be it shifting or transforming, for the sake of creation or destruction. Mind you, "destruction" does not mean the end of something but rather the beginning of a transformation, be it spiritual, emotional, mental, or just physical.

In order for something to be created, something must first be destroyed. Acceptance of that, and patience enough to learn and understand why something "bad" or "destructive" or "toxic" happens, is imperative in discovering what it is that you're being called to do in this reality.

Having said that, it's important to realize that the best way to have energy and magick work in your favour is understanding how to be aware of the way you affect its ever-moving current, because magick is already happening in your life, all the time. Even if you’re not doing spells.

Magick is in:

  • The way you speak to yourself and others

  • The way you feel when you walk into a room

  • The choices you make every day

  • The way you imagine your future

  • The way you think of yourself and others (Yes, think!)

And spirit energy responds to repetition, so the more you do or say something positive or negative, the more it becomes your reality, and what you think about on a regular basis counts the same way. Always remember: what you say to people, or even yourself, can repeat in someone's head over and over, and that repetition in their mind can cause a shift in someone else's reality. Again, repetition. And words have power.

Even people who don’t believe in magick are still using it! They’re just doing it without realizing it, pushing and manipulating energy using either conscious or unconscious intention. You don't have to be magickal to speak.

So when we say, "your spell isn’t working," what we’re really talking about is how your energy, your feelings, and your thoughts may not be lining up with what you want. And that’s okay. That’s something we can work with. Just know that it's not something you force, it's something you are. Which leads to my next point—

You Are the Magick

Magick is real, but it works in ways many people don't notice.

Here’s something a lot of books and videos don’t tell you: you are the most important part of the spell.

Not the herbs. Not the candle. Not the moon phase.

YOU.

Your energy is what fuels the spell. So if you’re feeling confused, stressed, unsure, or scared—even just a little—your spell might feel confused too. It’s like trying to write a song when your guitar is out of tune. You can still try, but it won’t sound the way you want it to.

Magick is not just about doing something—it’s about being something. That means:

  • Being calm and focused

  • Believing that what you’re asking for is possible

  • Feeling ready for the changes your spell will bring

  • Recognizing that there are things about your life or self you may need to remove to make room for this spell to work
  • Notice that a spell not working may only mean that one or two things may have been overlooked, and that it's not a total failure altogether
  • Exercising these abilities EVERY DAY

If those things aren’t true yet, your spell might not land the way you hope. But don’t worry—we’re going to talk about how to fix that.

Clear Out the Old Stuff First

I've already touched on this a little bit in the last point...

Imagine trying to paint a picture on a messy, scribbled-over canvas. It’s hard to see what you’re creating when the old stuff is still there. Better yet, try to play a melody in a noisy room—or even have a conversation. It's much harder to get your point across when there are other things in the way, but now imagine that you were the one who turned on all those radios, recorded all those thoughts of yours on audio notes, and decided to play them all back at once in a large echoey room, thinking that it would get your point across or solve your problems... Yes, that may have been your comfort zone at one point... or maybe not. But it's not serving you a purpose now.

Before your spell can bring in something new—like love, money, peace, or confidence—you have to make room for it.

That means letting go of things like:

  • Doubts

  • Fear

  • Old anger or sadness

  • Negative thoughts

  • Guilt

  • Trauma

These feelings are totally normal. We all have them. But if you don’t give them space to be felt and released, they can get in the way of your magick. Think of them like fog on a window—you can’t see clearly until you wipe it away.

Before casting your spell, ask yourself:

  • Am I still holding on to anything that might block this?

  • Do I believe I deserve what I’m asking for?

  • Am I ready to let go of the past?

This is where shadow work is crucial; contacting the powers that be, speaking with your ancestors and angels to lead the way, and calling on spirit guides who can open your eyes to what you've experienced in the past, be it a past life or just stored childhood trauma, or even just your higher self for better perspective so that you can essentially face things that happened to you in the past are all necessary in order to fine-tune your energy's frequency so that you begin to align with the reality you want. Even a few minutes of deep breathing, journaling, or crying it out can help clear your energy. Then your spell has room to grow.

It's not always cut-and-dry; some people end up having to dig up memories that they forgot were there, and that could lead to a more lengthy healing period-- Think of it as healing a wound that got infected from neglect: the longer it took before you decided to attend to it, the longer it's going to take to heal. Nature doesn't happen overnight. You have to find the source of the problem before you can heal everything that came after because of it.

But still, it doesn't mean that you have to wait that long for your spell to work. If anything, you can tweak the tools you're using to adapt with your current energy, just so you can get the ball rolling.

For instance, if you're looking to manifest love but discover that it's not working, and then after some digging, you realize that you really just need someone to validate you, then tweak your spell so that you bring that validation to you. (also note: if you're not validating yourself in the first place, validation from others can and will become empty, so work on a spell to build self-validation first.) Doing it this way means that your magick will grow and evolve with you, as it should, instead of it being seen as something you push or force. Energy and magick IS YOU, not something separate from you that you possess.

This is where shadow work is crucial;

You have to find the source of the problem before you can heal everything that came after because of it.

Then your spell has room to grow.

Magick Works in Layers

As I've already mentioned, magick takes repetition to manifest. What it also takes is attention to all your senses, meaning understanding all the ingredients it takes to make anything a reality, as well as your "why" behind this creation.

Let me break it down:

Magick isn’t a light switch that flips on right away. It’s more like growing a garden. You can point at a patch of dirt and call it a garden all you want, but it's not really going to do anything until you actually do something more than just talk about it. As a matter of fact, if you keep calling it a garden without an intention or vision for what you want your garden to look like, that energy you're sending into the dirt is going to manifest anyway it wants to, meaning weeds galore, which for a witch who sees beauty and purpose in everything—and/or whose standards are low—it may be just fine, but for most it won't be what they wanted or envisioned.

Now, I'm an astrologer,

and I operate in elemental magick regularly,

so this is the best that I can explain this,

but you can digest this any way you like.

Manifestation requires all five senses to be activated because it creates that seed to begin with, but in my experience, in order for the seed you manifested to even end up planted, magick requires the four elements to also be activated:

  •  Earth: Physical Manifestation and Action
  •  Air: Thought and Communication
  •  Water: Emotion and intuition
  •  Fire: Activation, determination, drive and desire for change

Now, I'm an astrologer, and I operate in elemental magick regularly, so this is the best that I can explain this, but you can digest this any way you like.

Calling that patch of dirt a garden is a good start, but that's only the air element.

You gotta be tired of that patch of dirt being just a patch of dirt and want to make it something else. That's the Fire element.

You gotta have a love for that patch of dirt, see it as beautiful and full of potential, and be willing to trust and have faith that it'll eventually become what you intend it to be, even though you haven't dropped a single seed yet. That's the Water element.

And THEN you have to be willing to plant the seeds. Earth element.

And going back to my point of repetition, just doing that once and then proceeding to then neglect it isn't going to do much, either.

Everything alive requires love and attention as much as we crave water, food and air. Without it, all things waste away into nothing. And your love for anything or anyone drives you to continue to not only give them the sustenance they need to thrive but also hold on with patience and resilience and faith even when things don't pan out immediately the way you expect. As I've mentioned earlier, If a plant—or spell—hasn't manifested, it could just be that you may have overlooked something, or that one or two things may just need a little extra care. It's not a TOTAL failure. Have Patience.

And that counts on both sides of the veil. Again, spirit energy thrives on repetition. Loving yourself—and every extension of yourself—repetitively is an important part of building your garden.

Here's another, more internal/spiritual way of looking at it (if it helps at all):

  1. Physical: What’s happening in real life—your actions, routines, and surroundings. (Earth)

  2. Mental: Your thoughts and beliefs. (Air)

  3. Emotional: Your feelings—both what you’re feeling now and what you’ve felt before. (Water)

  4. Etheric: Your life energy, also called your aura or energy body. (Fire)

  5. Astral: Your dreams, symbols, and imagination. (Spirit)

  6. Spiritual: Your soul, your higher self, and your connection to something bigger than you. (Spirit)

If one of these levels is out of balance, it can make it harder for your spell to land. For example:

  • You do a spell for confidence, but in your mind, you’re still saying “I’m not good enough.”

  • You do a spell for love, but deep down, you’re still hurting from a breakup you never healed.

  • You do a spell for money, but you secretly believe money is bad or hard to get.

In these cases, the spell is trying to work—but something in your energy is blocking it. When you fix that block, the spell has a much better chance of working.

Moreover, creating a garden requires getting to know the situation and environment that seed needs to become what you want it to be. Meaning understanding yourself and your environment and emotions is crucial for getting a yourself aligned with what you want.

As I mentioned, If your spell isn't working, it's because there's something in the way, of course. But also remember that growth happens slowly, underneath the surface, until one day, you see the results.

Okay, that was a lot of talking, so let me sum it up:

1. Crave Change

2. Fall in love with change

3. Speak change into your life

4. Have patience with the change

5. Take action and initiate change

6. Study, research, trial and error until you create your desired change

7. Give thanks and be grateful for all changes

8. Rinse and repeat

Spells Take Time and Practice

You wouldn’t expect to lift 100 pounds the first time you go to the gym, right? Magick is kind of the same.

Spells take practice. And they take time. ONCE AGAIN, If your spell didn’t work right away, it doesn’t mean you failed. It just means something needs more attention.

Try asking yourself:

  • Do I need to repeat this spell over a few days?

  • Do I need to be more specific with my intention?

  • Is there a better time to do this spell, when my energy is stronger?

Repetition is a powerful tool. Doing a spell more than once (especially during a full moon, new moon, or over several days) builds energy. It’s like charging a battery. The more you focus, the stronger it gets.

Yeah, that last section was really long, so I thought I'd make this part short and sweet.

You Don’t Have to Be “Perfect” to Do Magick

Just in case I overwhelmed you with the whole garden metaphor, let me be clear:Magick is an art, and art is subjective, meaning it's based on the artist. It's an extension of you, and you're not meant to be perfect.

Some people stop doing spells because they’re afraid of doing them “wrong.” Maybe they think:

  • I don’t know enough. (You're not meant to!)

  • I don’t have the right tools. (You don't need to!)

  • I’m not doing this like the book says. (You're not supposed to! ...sometimes.)

Be willing to make mistakes! THAT'S how you learn and mature into who you want to be. When you read that spell in that book you bought, know that it was created according to the style of a different practitioner, with different techniques, perspectives, and beliefs as well as different relationships with the crystals, plant spirits, etc. than you do or will have. It's never going to be an absolutely perfect fit for you necessarily unless you get to know the ingredients and they resonate with you. If you find an ingredient that better fits the intention you're going for, then feel free to try it. And if it doesn't work, that's okay. But don't run away from mistakes! These experiences are how you get to know yourself and the world around you.

Magick is not about perfection. It’s about connection.

What matters most is:

  • Your intention

  • Your energy

  • Your trust in yourself

Use what you have. Speak from your heart. Be honest with the universe. That’s what makes a spell powerful.

Let me be blunt:

Stop trying to be perfect.

Be willing to make mistakes! THAT'S how you learn and mature into who you want to be.

Perfect is boring. Do you WANT to be boring!?

Let me be blunt: Stop trying to be perfect. Perfect is boring. Do you think you're boring? If you do, admit to it. Admit it to yourself. That's fine. After that, allow yourself to be vulnerable, maybe not with the world right away, but practice being vulnerable with yourself, and build confidence in your transparency.

Being honest with yourself, instead of building a foundation on trying to look like you have it all together when you know you don't, is the best way to build a reality that caters to you.

Everyday Magick Is Real, Too

I already kinda mentioned this in the beginning, but you don’t need to wait for a spell to use magick. You’re already using it every day:

  • When you daydream about your future

  • When you speak kind words to yourself or others

  • When you clean your room and feel the energy shift

  • When you write in your journal and feel lighter

These things aren’t just nice—they’re magickal. They’re ways you shape your reality with your thoughts, feelings, and actions.

When you live with intention, your whole life becomes a spell.

What to Ask Yourself When a Spell Isn’t Working

Photo by Lucas Andrade on Unsplash

Let’s say you did a spell and nothing happened—or something happened that wasn’t what you wanted.

Here are some questions to help figure out why:

  1. Did I really believe the spell could work?

    • If you felt doubtful or silly while doing the spell, that might have weakened it. Try building belief first with smaller spells or visualization exercises.

  2. Am I emotionally ready for this change?

    • Big changes can be scary, even when we want them. Make sure you’re really open to what you’re asking for.

  3. Did I clear out old energy before I started?

    • Take time to release anger, sadness, fear, or guilt before doing magick.

  4. Is there another level of the spell that needs help?

    • Look at your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. What needs attention?

  5. Do I need more time or more practice?

    • Be patient. Magick doesn’t always move fast. Keep working on it.

  6. Did I follow up in my physical reality?

    • Magick needs action, too! If you did a spell for a job, did you also apply for jobs? If you did a spell for love, are you open to meeting people?

Final Thoughts: Magick Starts with You

Your magick isn’t broken. You’re not doing it wrong. You don’t need fancier tools or more complicated spells. You just need to come back to yourself.

You are the most powerful tool you have. Your heart, your mind, your energy—that’s where the real magick lives.

So if your spell didn’t work the way you hoped, take a breath. Be gentle with yourself. Try again, with more awareness, more trust, and more honesty.

Clean your energy. Speak your truth. Take real steps toward what you want.

That’s when your magick truly starts to shine.

And remember: you are already magickal. You’re just learning how to use it. [AR]
